Tottenham defender Michael Dawson sees no reason why the club cannot compete for the Premier League title this season.
Spurs have made a relatively underwhelming start to the campaign, but are currently seventh and only five points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
With the top half of the table already congested, it has been speculated that any side from a possible six could lift the trophy at the end of the season.
Tottenham were the most active of the big teams in the summer transfer window, spending over £100m on new talent.
Although Dawson says that securing a top four finish is the aim, he refused to rule out a push to the title:
“Our expectations are high. There’s no hiding at the start of the season. Our aim was to be in the top four. That hasn’t changed.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.
“But we aim high and we believe that we have got the squad – and the quality in the dressing room – to go all the way.”
Spurs have been solid defensively this term – keeping 13 clean sheets in all competitions – but have struggled in front of goal with only nine league goals – fewer than 18th placed Fulham and just three more than rock-bottom Crystal Palace.
However, Dawson believes that the team’s new attacking talent will settle soon and start finding the back of the net on a regular basis:
“Yes, we would have liked to have scored a few more goals and turned a few more of the draws into wins.
“But we have had a great start. Our best in the Premier League. “We have to take a lot of positives from that. And those goals will come.”
Can Tottenham complete for the title? Or will fighting for the top four be a challenge?
