Glasgow Rangers have missed out on Matthew Sorinola, who has joined Belgium outfit Union Saint-Gilloise.
The Lowdown: Sorinola targetted
With just one game left this season (Sky Sports), the Gers are planning ahead for next term and beyond. They have already completed the signing of Fashion Sakala (rangers.co.uk), while Nnamdi Ofoborh will also join up with the squad after putting pen to paper earlier this year.
As a Champions League run looms, though, the 55-time Scottish champions are unlikely to stop at those two new arrivals. Sorinola, according to TEAMtalk, was on the club’s radar.
The Latest: Missed out
Unfortunately, the Gers have missed out on the 20-year-old defender.
On Friday, Saint-Gilloise confirmed they have signed Sorinola on a three-year deal.
The Verdict: Plenty of potential
This term has been Sorinola’s breakout campaign. He has made 43 appearances in all competitions in Milton Keynes, scoring twice and providing six assists (Transfermarkt). With West Ham also interested at one point, Hammers insider ExWHUemployee said Sorinola is the best thing to come from the third-tier outfit since Dele Alli, now an established Premier League man and England international.
Current Dons boss Russell Martin called him “fantastic” earlier this season (miltonkeynes.co.uk).
With Borna Barisic’s understudy Calvin Bassey letting both himself and his teammates down by breaching coronavirus regulations to attend a house party earlier this year (BBC), and playing just 101 minutes in all competitions in 2021, Sorinola could have been a much-welcome new arrival. As it is, Ross Wilson and co must look elsewhere to find an able deputy to Barisic.
In other news, Rangers have been urged to sign this right-back.
